LOS ANGELES (January 26, 2016) – XLrator Media (Jimi: All Is By My Side, The Machine) announced the launch of its “LIFEFRAME” documentary releasing label, which will offer “real stories about people, arts, culture and society to entertain and inspire audiences around the globe,” said CEO Barry Gordon.

LIFEFRAME has acquired a robust initial slate, and will begin releasing films in April 2016 with the theatrical release of the critically acclaimed and award-winning “Queen Mimi,” followed by the highly anticipated Duff McKagan (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver) autobiographical documentary “It’s So Easy And Other Lies,” based on his New York Times best-selling memoir.

Upcoming LIFEFRAME releases include Comic-Con 2015’s Best Documentary winner “She Makes Comics,” a fascinating look at women in the comics industry from the early days of the art form to the present, and “Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation” which will be released in November 2016 to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. The film, from One Bowl Productions, takes audiences on an inspirational and spiritual journey with the Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team as they compete for the 2015 World Championships for the first time on their home soil in the sovereign Haudenosaunee nation.

LIFEFRAME will launch its production initiative via a partnership with Rugged Entertainment, the production company of Academy Award®-nominated documentary filmmaker Peter Spirer (Rhyme & Reason, the Beef series, Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel). The companies will co-produce a production slate of three “lifestyle” documentary features which XLrator Media will distribute worldwide on LIFEFRAME. The companies are also partnering to acquire programming to release on the label.

The first film in the XLrator-Rugged slate deal, currently in production, is “Legend of 420.” The humorous documentary examines the history and lore surrounding marijuana’s infamous “number” from the early days of the drug counter-culture to how 420 is celebrated around the world (both at 4:20pm and on April 20th) in today’s increasingly mainstream pot culture.

“LIFEFRAME is a welcome addition to our current family of highly curated releasing labels MACABRE, TURBO and PACE. New channels of distribution have created an ‘evolved viewer’ who is equally entertained by high-quality documentary content as he or she is by major Hollywood movies. LIFEFRAME will surely benefit from this trend. In addition to working with the immensely talented Peter Spirer and his Rugged team, LIFEFRAME will continue its support and outreach to filmmakers, foundations and others to foster the creation and distribution of top-level content for the global marketplace. We are committed to making LIFEFRAME into one of the world’s premier documentary labels,” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.

“This is the most exciting time for documentary filmmaking in my 25-year career, with more viewers, media coverage and distribution outlets than ever before. We are thrilled to partner with XLrator Media to bring fascinating new non-fiction content to audiences around the world,” said Rugged Entertainment head Peter Spirer.

One of the fastest-growing independent film distribution companies in North America since its creation in 2010, XLrator Media, LLC (XLratorMedia.com) will release 25 films in 2016. Its recent releases include Academy Award-winner John Ridley’s Jimi: All is by My Side starring Andre Benjamin as rock legend Jimi Hendrix and SXSW hits Housebound, The Mule and The Diabolical. XLrator Media is also the home of the acclaimed MACABRE and TURBO genre film labels and the PACE multicultural film label. The company launched its first OTT channel with the MACABRE Collection on Hulu and co-produced 400 Days which was released by Syfy Films. The company previously released such diverse films as The Machine, CBGB, American Mary, Storm Surfers 3D, Banshee Chapter, Ironclad: Battle for Blood and Five Star.

Rugged Entertainment LLC is a full-service film and media production company led by Academy® and Emmy® Award nominated Director/Producer Peter Spirer. Its acquisition of the Aslan Productions film library brought Rugged’s stable of films to 15 urban-themed documentaries and two narrative features, with four films in post production and an exciting new venture with XLrator Media.  Beyond the urban realm, Rugged’s label has evolved to produce films that relate to a wide array of audiences, including films about the arts, sports, human interest, and history.
