XLRATOR MEDIA SETS SXSW DOCUMENTARY “MATEO” FOR AUGUST 2015 RELEASE

LOS ANGELES (August 6, 2015) – XLrator Media (Jimi: All is By My Side, The Machine) has acquired North American distribution rights to the acclaimed SXSW documentary MATEO by director Aaron I. Naar, who produced with Benjamin Dohrmann. The film will be released on XLrator Media’s PACE multi-cultural releasing label in theaters on August 21, 2015 and on VOD and iTunes August 25, 2015.

“MATEO is a unique music-driven documentary in the spirit of Searching for Sugar Man and Buena Vista Social Club. Matthew’s story and the beautiful soundtrack that surrounds it delves deeply into both Mexican-American and Cuban cultures and rhythms. As the U.S. re-establishes diplomatic and cultural relations with Cuba, MATEO provides a fascinating glimpse into the everyday lives of the Cuban people, while still having roots planted deeply in East L.A.” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.

Matthew Stoneman dreamed of pop stardom. Instead, he went to jail, learned Spanish, and emerged as “Mateo,” America’s first white mariachi singer. Mateo is on the brink of completing an album of original songs in Havana. But his estrangement from friends and family, his criminal past, and his love for Cuban women could derail him on his quest for fame.

“We’re thrilled to partner with XLrator Media to get our film out to a broader, mainstream audience after a successful festival run. XLrator’s focus on unique, character-driven stories from around the globe is a boon for independent filmmakers and audiences alike,” said director Aaron I. Naar.

MATEO is executive produced by Andrew Lauren (The Spectacular Now, The Squid and the Whale), Louis Venezia (The Diplomat, Our Nixon) and Adam Schlesinger (Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, Smash His Camera).  The deal was negotiated by XLrator Media’s Barry Gordon and Amanda Lebow on behalf of the filmmakers.
